Insomnia Programme

Our Sleep Health Centres are unique to Australia. They provide all the required services needed to diagnose, treat, and sustainably support patients with sleep disorders. At a single site or campus, patients receive Respiratory and Sleep Physician Consultation, state of the art sleep investigation unit based diagnostic testing, initiation of treatment including positive airway pressure devices or oral appliances, and receive long-term follow-up care and management.

Help is at hand!

Insomnia is isolating and debilitating, resulting in sleepless nights and exhausted, lethargic days for its sufferers. Respiratory and Sleep Specialists offer highly specialised, world class Insomnia Programmes conducted on a regular basis by Clinical Psychologist, Jonathan Andrews.

Our programme comprises group sessions and individual consultations with our Psychologist. Group session content includes coverage of sleep basics, sleep needs and the consequences of sleep deprivation. Sleep hygiene and sleep invitation techniques are also discussed. The aim of the group sessions is to focus on a 'good sleepers' lifestyle - what it is and how to create one.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia Group Programme

The Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Programme is a 5 week programme designed to alleviate the severity of insomnia. The group will go for 1 hour and is run over consecutive weeks.

Transient insomnia is very common. In life there are stressful circumstances that lead to sleep loss. Moving house, a change of job, whatever significant change occurs in our life, these precipitating circumstances account for just about the full extent of our sleep difficulty. Usually when we adapt to the new change, for example we meet some of the neighbours and get used to some of the sounds in our new house, we adapt and our sleep returns to normal.

Moderate or long term insomnia is different. In these scenarios the extent of the sleep loss is not accounted for by the circumstances that we find ourselves in. Research into insomnia has revealed that there are a variety of cognitions and ways of coping that maintain insomnia. These maintenance factors account for the struggle that we have, and undoing them typically leads to alleviation of insomnia.

These cognitions and behaviours are the focus of our group. We will be identifying, assessing and undoing these problematic areas. In our first session you will receive a full manual that outlines these cognitions and behaviours (as well as the course). This manual is yours to keep.

You will not have to speak if you don't really want to, though it is good to participate if you can as others need to know that they are not alone in their sleep struggle. While I recommend that you do disclose some information, it is not therapy in the older sense (you will not be asked to talk about your mum and dad?!). You will need to be prepared to fill in some questionnaires, monitor your sleep with a sleep diary (initially), and change some of your habits. If you can do this, then I'm expecting that you'll find the group to be helpful and supportive. I hope to see you there.
Kind Regards,
Dr Jonathan Andrews
