Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP pronounced see-pap) is considered the gold standard in treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). CPAP works through the delivery of machine generated pressurised air that is directed to the upper airway via a mask worn during sleep. The pressurised air splints the upper airway, preventing it from collapsing and closing. Snoring and obstructive apnoeas are eliminated. Some people take to CPAP readily and immediately. Many require support and guidance to help them keep on track. Our service has been designed to provide that essential support.
If CPAP therapy is recommended after your diagnostic sleep study, you will need to return for CPAP education and a mask fitting and a second overnight sleep study. During this second study, highly trained staff will determine the correct CPAP pressure required to prevent your upper airway from collapsing and keep you safe during sleep.
Why use CPAP?
Clinical studies and patients themselves have shown that the daily use of CPAP for treatment of OSA can have improvements in the following:
- Vitality and motivation
- Job performance
- Mood, sexual drive and performance
- Alertness while driving
- Quality of life
- Quality of sleep
CPAP has also been found to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients, reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack and congestive heart failure.
