Respiratory FAQs

How long does the test take?

It will depend on the test that you have been referred for. Generally most tests will be completed within 20 - 30 minutes.

What are the costs invloved?

Most tests are billed at the scheduled rate through Medicare. If you are an inpatient and have private health insurance, then you are able to claim the balance from your private health fund.

Will I be able to drive my car after the tests?

Yes, most patients experience no difficulties.

Are the tests difficult to perform?

No, the tests involve blowing into equipment that has the capacity of measuring your lung function.

Are the tests dangerous?

Pulmonary (lung) function testing is not considered dangerous. Trained laboratory personnel perform and supervise testing. For Challenge and Exercise testing a Thoracic Physician is in attendance.

What happens to my results?

The results are sent to the doctor who referred you for the test.

Do I need to do any preparation for the test?

Bronchial Provocation Test

8 hours before - do not take relievers e.g. Ventolin, Bricanyl, Responlin, Airomir and Intal (Preventer)

24 hours before - do not take Atrovent, Neulin, Theodur, Brondecon

48 hours before - do not take combination therapy/symptom controllers e.g. Serevent, Seretide, Oxis, Spirivia and Tilade (Preventer)

72 hours before - do not take anti-histamines e.g. Claratine, Sudafed, Polarmine, Avil etc.

Day of test - avoid caffeine and stimulants e.g. coffee, tea, chocolates, cola drinks.

Exercise Test

Day of test - avoid heavy metals, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for riding a bike. On the day of the test, report to reception inward 2W of the Wesley Hospital (Brisbane) or Respiratory Laboratory of St. Andrews medical Centre (Toowoomba) at the appointment time. A doctor will be present for the testing.

Basal Metabolic Rate Test

Prior to the test - have a light breakfast (no coffee) and no smoking

Cancel the test - if there is illness

Day of the test - report to reception inward 2W of the Wesley Hospital (Brisbane) or Respiratory Laboratory of St. Andrews medical Centre (Toowoomba) at the appointment time.

Allergen Skin Test

72 hours before - do not take anti-histamines e.g. Claratine, Sudafed, Polarmine, Avil etc
