The common symptoms of many sleep problems or disorders are:
- Excessive daytime sleepiness despite a 'good' night's sleep
- Loud snoring
- Irritability or mood changes
- Restless sleep
- Morning headaches
- Poor concentration or memory
- Passing urine frequently during the night
If you find you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it is possible you may have a sleep disorder. Complete the Epworth Sleepiness Test and Berlin Questionnaire listed below. If you score highly on either test you should seek further advice from your GP or Sleep Physician.
If, on the basis of your tests your GP or Sleep Physician thinks you should have a sleep study, ask him or her to complete a sleep study referral form and fax or email it to us to make a booking for an overnight sleep study. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is a scale intended to measure daytime sleepiness. It can be a helpful tool in learning more about your sleep. The ESS was written in 1991 by Dr Murray Johns of The Epworth Hospital, Melbourne.
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a formula used to estimate the proportion of your body that consists of fat. It is currently the best guide for calculating a healthy weight range for people aged between 20 and 65.
The Berlin Sleep Questionnaire was developed in 1996 at the Conference on Sleep in Primary Care in Berlin, Germany and is a 10-question test well-known for its accuracy in predicting the presence of sleep apnoea in patients.
