The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is a test that consists of a series of 4, forty-minute wake periods scheduled approximately two hours apart in a single day. The test is performed to record any slight "dozing" you may experience while being asked to stay awake for a period of time. The MWT is performed the following day after a sleep study (diagnostic or CPAP review) by a highly trained Sleep Scientist. The test is used to help determine if you are falling asleep at times when you should be wide awake.
Why should I have an MWT?
The main reason for undergoing an MWT is to prove that a given sleep and/or breathing disorder treatment (that is CPAP or an MAS device) is effective. This test is often requested by Sleep Physicians to obtain additional confirmational data for individuals, usually commercial drivers, (ie. pilots, truck drivers etc) that their treatment is optimal.
What should I do to prepare for this test?
You will also be asked to keep a sleep diary logging the amount and times you have slept over the past 2 weeks. It is extremely important the sleep diary is completed and recorded accurately to facilitate diagnosis and treatment. If you did not receive a sleep diary or would like to download another one, please click here and download a copy.
On the day of the MWT?
Do not take any naps after you are woken by the nurse or technician the morning of your MWT. You are able to have breakfast, but you are NOT permitted to eat or drink foods that may contain caffeine on the day of the MWT as this can interfere with your sleeping pattern. Please take and bring all your usual medications including any pain relief that you may require unless you are told not to by your doctor.
Please bring a packed lunch with you on the night of your sleep study for the following day as lunch is not provided by the hospital. If you would like to buy your lunch, a staff member is available to collect your lunch from the 24 hour convenience store located opposite RiverCity Hospital.
