The Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) is a sleep study with a series of 4-5, 20 minute naps taken at two hour intervals in a single day. The MSLT is performed the following day after a diagnostic or CPAP review sleep study. The MSLT testing period commences at around 8:00 am and will end around 4:00 pm on the same day. The test is performed by a highly trained Sleep Scientist and will determine how long it takes you to fall asleep at each opportunity you are given during the nap sessions throughout the day. You will be asked to supply a urine toxicology screen prior to the start of an MSLT. This is performed to rule out the possibility of ingested medications that have an adverse effect on sleep.
Our rooms are darkened and airconditioned to allow for optimal sleep quality and are equipped with a private ensuite bathroom and television.
What should I do to prepare for this test?
You will usually be asked to keep a sleep diary logging the amount and times you have slept over the 2 week period preceding your MSLT. It is extremely important the sleep diary is completed and recorded accurately to facilitate diagnosis and treatment. If you did not receive a sleep diary or would like to download another one, please click here and download a copy.
On the day of the MSLT?
Do not take any naps after you are woken by the nurse or technician the morning of your MSLT. You are permitted to have breakfast, but you are NOT permitted to eat or drink foods that may contain caffeine on the day of the MSLT as this can interfere with your sleep. Please take and bring all your usual medications including any pain relief that you may require unless you are told not to do so by your doctor.
Please bring a packed lunch with you on the night of your sleep study for the following day as lunch is not provided by the hospital. If you would like to buy your lunch, a staff member is available to collect your lunch from the 24 hour convenience store located opposite RiverCity Hospital.
Why should I have an MSLT?
- To test for Narcolepsy.
- To distinguish physical tiredness from true excessive daytime sleepiness.
- To document sleep/breathing disorder treatment is effective. (CPAP treatment).
