A Mandibular Advancement Splint is a non invasive device used for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. The MAS is worn during sleep to maintain the patency of the upper airway by increasing its dimensions and reducing collapsibility by maintaining mandible protrusion.
Because all patients' needs are varied, a number of customisable additions to MAS devices are possible. Such additions include elastic retention for mouth breathers, anterior ramp for bruxing and lateral movement and treatment solution are available for edentulous patients.
Mild to Moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (AHI 5-15) patients may find the splint will reduce their obstructions during the night. Usually people with Moderate to Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (AHI 15-30+), are recommend a trial of CPAP over an MAS device. Chronic snorers without Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, may also find a MAS device beneficial to use during the night to prevent their snoring.
We have 17 Respiratory and Sleep Physicians who can discuss treatment options with you and if prescribed, refer you to our own MAS service or another Specialist Orthodontist who is qualified to custom make Mandibular Advancement Splints.
